Health Care Acupoints for Frost’s Descent Solar Term
As Frost’s Descent ushers in the colder edge of late autumn, nights grow chilly and eventually frosty. As the old saying goes, “Nine out of ten stomach ailments stem from cold.” With the increasing temperature fluctuations between day and night, the stomach—which thrives on warmth and fears cold—becomes particularly vulnerable. Exposure to cold, irregular eating habits, or other factors can lead to stomach pain, bloating, and discomfort. Mild cases may result in belching or acid reflux, while severe cases can cause spasms and sharp pain. To alleviate these symptoms, acupressure and moxibustion on specific acupoints can be highly effective.
Zhongwan(CV12)
Location: Located on the upper abdomen, along the midline of the body, Zhongwan(CV12) is 4 finger-widths above the center of the navel.
Self-Care Techniques: Apply moderate pressure with the thumb to perform clockwise circular motions or sustained compression on the Zhongwan acupoint for 5 minutes. Alternatively, ignite a moxa stick and conduct mild thermal therapy by rotating it 5 cm above the acupoint for 10-15 minutes.
Zusanli(ST36)
Location: On the lateral aspect of the lower leg, 3 finger-widths below Dubi(ST35), one fingerbreadth lateral to the anterior crest of the tibia, along the line connecting Dubi(ST35) and Jiexi(ST41).
Zusanli(ST36) has the functions of drying up spleen dampness, strengthening spleen and stomach, and is an important acupoint for health. It can treat various syndromes of deficiency and fatigue, relieve stomach pain, bloating, diarrhea, vomiting, etc. This acupoint can be rubbed, pressed, or treated with moxibustion using the methods described above.
Regular stimulation of these two acupoints during Frost's Descent enhances physical resilience, regulates spleen-stomach function, and prevents seasonal ailments.
Furthermore, autumn often evokes a sense of sadness and desolation in people's hearts, which can easily lead to depressive emotions. Here, we can massage the acupoint in the middle of the stomach to relieve our sadness and worries. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that the Danzhong(CV17) acupoint is closely related to a person's joyful emotions.
Location: Midline of the chest, level with the 4th intercostal space at the nipple line.
Suitable for gentle kneading or acupressure (avoid moxibustion).
The “Shang” tone, associated with autumn in traditional Chinese medicine's five tone therapy, is characterized by its solemn, majestic, and slightly melancholic quality. Autumn corresponds to the "Shang" tone in traditional Chinese medicine's five tone therapy, with a high pitched, tragic, and majestic style of music in the Shang mode. Part of it is composed of commercial music with distant melodies, broad horizons, or passionate styles, possessing the "golden" qualities of descending and converging, which can resonate with lungs. It has the function of calming the mind and dreams, which can strengthen the function of the "lung and large intestine" system, promote the upper respiratory tract, lungs, skin, thyroid gland, and assist in intestinal detoxification.
