Tea Recommendations for Frost’s Descent Solar Term

Frost’s Descent Solar Term marks the final phase of autumn, a time when cold air sweeps in, bringing sharp drops in temperature. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), this solar term represents the transition of yang energy from “harvesting” to “storing”. To align with this seasonal shift, it is essential to protect the body’s vital energy and guard against the intrusion of cold. Below are three nourishing teas to support daily health during this period.

Yupingfeng Tea

Ingredients: 6g Fangfeng (Siler root), 10g Huangqi (Astragalus root), and 6g Baizhu (White Atractylodes)

Benefits: Strengthening the body’s defenses and boosting energy.

This tea is particularly beneficial for individuals with weak lung qi, excessive sweating, or a tendency to catch colds frequently. For those with a sensitive or cold-prone digestive system, adding black tea to the blend can warm the stomach while enhancing its protective effects.

After Frost’s Descent, temperatures continues to drop, with day and night temperature fluctuations often exceeding 10°C. Such conditions strain the skin and respiratory system, making it a high-risk period for colds, fevers, or the worsening of chronic conditions, especially among the elderly or those with weakened immunity.

Mulberry Leaf Tea

Ingredients: 10g dried mulberry leaves

Benefits: Dispelling wind-heat, soothing lung dryness, calming liver yang, improving vision, cooling the blood, and stopping bleeding.

Mulberry leaves, with their slightly bitter sweet and cooling nature, target the lung and liver meridians. Regular consumption can help prevent wind-heat colds, dry coughs, sore throats, headaches caused by blood deficiency, and eye fatigue. Modern research has also highlighted their potential to lower blood pressure, regulate blood sugar, reduce cholesterol, prevent blood clots, and support weight management. Frost-touched mulberry leaves not only have bright colors, but are especially prized for their resilience and enhanced medicinal properties. Mulberry leaves can clear heat and moisten the lungs, and have good therapeutic effects on sore throat, cough, and phlegm caused by lung heat. They can be paired with Ophiopogon root in a 2:1 ratio for added soothing effects.

Liver-Nourishing and Eye-Brightening Tea

Ingredients: Dried longan fruit, red dates, goji berries, chrysanthemum flowers

Benefits: Nourishing yin, moistening lungs, clearing liver heat, and sharpening vision.

Longan fruit nourishes the blood and helps shield the body from the drying effects of autumn winds. Chrysanthemum flowers clear liver heat and remove toxicity, alleviate dizziness and blurry vision, and provide relief from seasonal colds. Goji berries support liver, kidney and lung health while boosting immunity, and red dates aid in detoxifying the liver. This mildly sweet tea is perfect for those who stay up late and overuse their eyes during dry autumn seasons.
